Topics:

Abortion

Liberal*:

A woman has the right to chose. The unborn baby is not living; therefore, it does not have any rights.

Conservative**:

Human life begins at conception; therefore, the baby has the right to life.

Affirmative Action

Liberal:

The government should make up for past racism (slavery) against blacks by creating laws giving them the same opportunities.

Conservative:

Schools and jobs should accept people for their intelligence and capabilities not solely based on their race or gender.

Death Penalty

Liberal:

The death penalty should be abolished because it is cruel and risks the possibility of executing an innocent person.

Conservative:

The death penalty is a suitable punishment for those who have committed mass murder or similarly extreme crimes.

Economy

Liberal:

A system where the government regulates the economy is best for ensuring the public interest is fulfilled and a fair playing field for competitors.

Conservative:

The free market system and private enterprises ensure the highest amount of opportunity and highest standard of living for all.

Energy

Liberal:

The world should explore different sources of energy because oil levels are being rapidly depleted. The government should also control gas and electric industries.

Conservative:

Oil, gas, and coal are abundant sources of energy that are especially in surplus in the United States. Increased domestic production can lower the prices of energy and decrease our dependence on other countries. Private ownership of gas and electric industries is best.

Assisted Suicide

Liberal:

A person has the right to die by their own choice and should have the option of ending pain and suffering. The legalization of euthanasia would also lower health care costs.

Conservative:

It is immoral and unethical to permit euthanasia and assisted suicide and allow someone to end their own life. The legalization of euthanasia could lead to doctors ending a non-terminally ill patient’s life.

Global Warming/Climate Change

Liberal:

Global Warming is caused by an increase of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere through the burning of fossil fuels. The government should pass laws that regulate carbon dioxide emissions. Many scientists support this theory.

Conservative:

Change in global temperature is natural over extended period of time. Science has not shown that humans can permanently impact the global temperature. Laws that limit carbon dioxide emissions increase price of fossil fuels for all and do near nothing for the environment.

Gun Control

Liberal:

The Second Amendment only allows for a trained militia and not for citizens to have and bear arms. Citizens don’t need guns for protection and should rely on law enforcement. More gun control laws are needed to prevent criminals from obtaining guns. More guns=more violence.

Conservative:

The Second Amendment gives qualified citizens the right to own guns and defend themselves. Additional laws will not prevent criminals from obtaining guns. Enforcement of current laws is needed. More guns for citizens who follow the law=less crime.

Healthcare

Liberal:

Free or cheap health care that is controlled by the government ensures that all can get the healthcare they need. Health care is a human right and because of that everyone should get equal benefits regardless of their ability to pay.

Conservative:

Free market health care that all Americans should have access to should be owned by private companies. Government controlled health care has poor quality and results in higher costs.

Immigration

Liberal:

Support legal immigration and pardons for those who enter legally. Both legal and illegal immigrants deserve the the same rights as American citizens; education and health services. It is unethical to deport or arrest illegal immigrants.

Conservative:

Only support legal immigration. Illegal immigrants break U.S law by entering illegally do not have the same rights as those who enter legally. Borders should be secured and immigration laws should be strictly enforced.

Eminent Domain

Liberal:

The government has the right to seize and possess private property as long as they give compensation for the property to it’s owner.

Conservative:

The government must respect citizen’s rights including the right to property. Therefore, eminent domain, in most cases, is wrong.

Religion and Government

Liberal:

The Bill of Rights implies a separation of church and state and as a result religion should be kept out of government and all public institutions.

Conservative:

The words “separation of church and state” cannot be found in the constitution, but it does say congress should not pass any laws that respect ”an establishment of religion”. This means that government is allowed to keep symbols of Christian heritage, for example, displayed in public places. Government should not involve itself in religion or religious freedom.

Same Sex Marriage

Liberal:

It should be legal for all to marry whomever they choose to love for the rest of their lives regardless of their sexual orientation. To make same sex marriage illegal would be to deny citizens their civil rights.

Conservative:

Marriage is the union of one man and one woman. Recognizing the marrying of two people of the same sex is to violate morals and the religious beliefs of Muslims, Christians, and Jews.

Taxes

Liberal:

Higher taxes and a large government are essential to addressing the injustices and needs of society. High taxes, especially for the wealthy, allow the government to assist the poor and create jobs.

Conservative:

Lower taxes and a smaller government with a limit on power are important to ensuring freedoms. Low taxes provide people with reason to start their own business, work, and save their money for a greater cause. Money earned by the people should remain largely with the people not the government.

The United Nations

Liberal:

The United States has a moral obligation to uphold support for the United Nations seeing as they work to help the human rights cause and enforce peace. American troops should follow the orders of the UN.

Conservative:

The UN has repeatedly failed its mission to keep peace and ensure human rights seen through the genocides, wars, and violations of human rights. The United States should worry about its own national issues first and not submit to those of the UN. American troops should never follow orders from the UN.

Terrorism

Liberal:

Global warming poses a greater threat than terrorism and should be the United States’ primary focus. Terrorism should be resolved through exceptional diplomacy.

Conservative:

Terrorism is one of the greatest threats to the freedom of the United States. Terrorists have attacked American soldiers ruthlessly and thus military force is the best way to deal with terrorism.

Welfare

Liberal:

Welfare, including long term welfare, is a program that provides for the needs of the poor. It is a key factor in protecting the poor and ensuring equality for the poor.

Conservative:

Long term welfare prevents people from becoming self-reliant. It is more compassionate to help people become self-reliant than to cause them to be dependent on the government. Opportunities should be provided for the poor to help them become self-reliant.
